My work is influenced by combining the old with the new and representing the perpetual motion of generations. I use layered textures with vintage fabrics, papers, paints and hand-embroidered stitching in contemporary compositions to suggest an undercurrent of contained history, narrative and identity.

THE REFOUND PIECE

I am usually really inspired by the layering of fabrics that are indicative of a history or story. For this project however, I wanted to evoke oppulence On a budget with rich Heavy velvets and jacquards and combinations of bold colours. This is a step outside my usual style but the outcome is something I would certainly have on display in my own home!

The emphasis of my practice is on texture, decoration and the hybrid mix of traditional and contemporary techniques; to create simple, uncomplicated fabrics and sculptural forms. Taking inspiration from my environment around me, I like to concentrate on the use of mark making and the narrative embedding within these marks and my surroundings.

THE REFOUND PIECE

The chair has such a simple design with nice clean lines, and I wanted to retain this. I am intrigued by explosions of colour and wanted to adopt this within the chair. I created this explosion within my fabric designs. These began life as fun, tribal inspired drawings, which were adapted on the computer into print designs and printed onto fabric. The chair structure itself is purposely left just simply painted to create this juxtaposition. 42cmx43cmx65cm MATERIALS wood, paint, metallic foils and hand designed fabrics

ARTIST STATEMENT

David McClelland has been creating: comics, editorial illustrations, storyboards, and album covers for the last 8 years with clients ranging from local musicians and screenwriters to The Times newspaper. Whilst the application of his work is diverse, it can be summarised as: drawing pictures about people and nature that tell a story.

THE REFOUND PIECE

I decided to utilise the rich texture and colour of the original wooden stools as the main colour and inspiration for the four designs. The designs are based upon animals recognized for their brown/orange colour. Each design was made by masking off areas of the wood with white paint that then allowed the original wooden colour to sing out. MATERIALS acrylic, matt varnish and metal paint.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I wouldn’t pin myself down to one medium. I’m constantly engaged in areas of design, animation, conceptual sculpture and installation. Through an obsession with line, growth, colour and replication, I use widely available, taken for granted materials to created tactile pieces which are based on the ideas of perception and curiosity.

THE REFOUND PIECE

I created the circular objects using tightly wound balloon ribbon. Having deciding to leave some of the wood exposed, the pattern I opted for was based on idea of how colours react with eachother, growth, and the natural pattern of things. MATERIALS Coloured balloon ribbon, paint, Glass top.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am hugely influenced by folk art, particularly Mexican and Aboriginal. I like to layer. Essentially constructing an organically evolved, often abstract version, of the original piece I am working on. More of which is seen in my creative business, Ginger Rosie’s Hand Painted Pots.

THE REFOUND PIECE

I wanted to bring a little bit of the Spring garden inside. My work is heavily influenced by folk art, and themes of nature, and I always get inspired at this time of year by the appearance of new flowers and colours, much missed over our long, gray winters. MATERIALS Acrylics, inks, embossing liquid.

ARTIST STATEMENT

This project was a bit of an adventure as I’m usually glued to a computer. However as a graphic designer I’m asked to solve problems all the time, and my creative work is always led by a core idea. Less haste was adopted while working on this as I registered the fact that you only get one shot at breaking a small piece of furniture. There is no Ctrl+Z function here.

THE REFOUND PIECE

If nostalgia is the theme, I could see no better object then this Ted Junior school chair. This little chair although humble, is a classic in its own right. I choose not to go overboard on the superficial changes, preferring to slightly alter the chairs function making it more dynamic. MATERIALS: Wood, paint

“The tea trolley. The chariot of hot beverages of delight. A four-wheeled, two-tiered transporter of traybakes and fifteens. From the ‘hood to the home, it’s a thing of beauty, a smooth way to enjoy a cuppa. And this trolley is a flaming hotrod of a beast. Bring yer tea, faster. Honestly” The piece is a beautiful 1960s piece given a bit of 1950s va-va-va-Voom!! Spray paint and varnish. With a bit of hotrod pep!!

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am Susie Cuthill a self taught textile artist, originally from Glasgow and one half of the Belfast based woolly hat business, Teddy Baby. Hats by day and interiors by night is my motto. I use long forgotten techniques and crafts, such as hand spinning wool and crocheting and bring them up to date by using contemporary designs and mixed media.

THE REFOUND PIECE

I liked the idea of a challenge, wool and metal side by side would be a hard one to marry together, so instead I decided to emphasise the contrast of textures. My obvious inspiration was the Harland and Wolff cranes, which I see on a daily basis, synonymous with Belfast and the epitome of industry in the city and the reason for spraying the stools legs yellow. The soft pad of the stools, crocheted using hand spun wool, techniques of our heritage. MATERIALS !00% hand spun wool, Metal paint
